CDL Drivers and Drug Testing

Semi Truck Lights onCommercial drivers play a vital role in maintaining transportation networks, and road safety is essential to their work. Given the responsibility they bear, drug testing for commercial driver’s license (CDL) holders was implemented by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA), a branch of the U.S. Department of Transportation. They oversee this function and regulate the testing of CDL Drivers. These regulations inform employers about pre-employment, random, post-accident, reasonable suspicion, and return-to-duty testing for CDL holders, ensuring fairness and consistency for drug testing.

Various drug testing methods are employed to find illegal substances in CDL drivers. The most common method is urine drug testing, where samples are collected and screened for a range of substances, including marijuana, cocaine, opioids, and amphetamines. Breath and saliva testing are used to detect alcohol consumption, particularly in post-accident situations. Hair testing is also an option due to its longer detection window. The FMCSA requires that employers conduct alcohol tests as soon as practicable following an accident – generally within 2 hours and no later than 8 hours from the time an accident occurred. Drug tests must be administered within 32 hours.

Respectful drug testing in the privacy of our office is one of the functions of occupational medicine. Occupational medical doctors also focus on preventing workplace injuries and helping identify the causes of workplace complaints.
