Rainstorm on the horizon

Keeping Outdoor Teams Safe During Florida’s Rainy Season

In Tallahassee, Florida’s rainy season can turn an ordinary construction site into a higher-risk workplace in a matter of minutes. Heavy rain, lightning, slick surfaces, standing water, unstable soil, and reduced visibility can all increase the likelihood of injuries. For contractors and employers with outdoor crews, the best rainy-season safety strategy is not simply reacting to storms: it is preparing before weather conditions deteriorate.

Start with a weather-specific jobsite plan that anticipates any weather outcome. Supervisors should monitor forecasts and radar throughout the day and establish clear rules for stopping work when lightning or severe storms approach. OSHA advises outdoor workers to seek shelter when thunder is heard or lightning is seen and to remain sheltered for at least 30 minutes after the last thunder. Crews should also know which buildings or hard-topped vehicles are designated safe locations.

Beware of Wet Conditions

Wet conditions also make slips, trips, and falls more likely. Walkways, ladders, scaffolds, roofs, and temporary access points should be inspected after significant rainfall. Mud, pooled water, loose debris, and slippery surfaces should be corrected before work resumes. OSHA’s construction rules require employers to maintain safety programs and conduct frequent and regular inspections of jobsites, materials, and equipment by competent persons.

Be Extra Careful Working with Excavation

Excavation work deserves special attention during prolonged or heavy rain. Saturated soil can change quickly, and water accumulation in trenches can create dangerous conditions. Employers should reevaluate excavations after storms and never assume yesterday’s safe trench is still safe today.

Rain does not eliminate Florida’s heat risk, either. High humidity can make physical work more stressful even when temperatures are lower than on sunny days. Crews still need access to drinking water, rest breaks, shaded or cooled recovery areas, and supervisors trained to recognize early signs of heat illness.

Having a Plan Helps

Preparation should also include a clear medical-response plan. OSHA’s construction standard requires employers to ensure medical personnel are available for occupational health advice and to make arrangements before work begins for prompt medical attention in the event of serious injury. Employers should know where injured workers will be evaluated, how supervisors will communicate with the medical provider, and what procedures will be used for return-to-work and modified-duty decisions.

Having a Partner Helps, Too

That is where a local occupational medicine partner can add real value. A clinic familiar with construction injuries can help employers develop injury-response protocols, provide prompt evaluations, perform fitness-for-duty assessments, manage workers’ compensation cases, and create practical return-to-work plans. Faster, coordinated care can help reduce unnecessary lost time while making sure employees are medically ready to resume their duties.

In the Tallahassee area, rainy-season safety is both a compliance issue and a business issue. A proactive approach protects employees, helps prevent costly disruptions, and keeps projects moving even when North Florida weather becomes unpredictable.
