Sitting too long? Occupational Medicine has a fix
Sedentary jobs, like prolonged driving or sitting at a desk, present several health risks. With our work culture increasingly dependent on these roles, understanding and mitigating these risks is essential because our work culture is increasingly reliant on these roles. Last month, we spoke about some of the challenges facing sedentary teams, here are the ways to address the top five concerns of sitting too long.
Cardiovascular Disease
Prolonged inactivity can significantly increase the risk of cardiovascular disease. Studies have shown that sitting for extended periods can lead to high blood pressure, elevated cholesterol, and increased risk of heart disease. This is often attributed to a slower metabolism during inactivity, which affects how the body processes sugar and fat.
How to fix these concerns: Incorporate regular breaks to stand, stretch, and move. Aim for a five-minute walk every hour and consider investing in a standing desk. This movement helps stimulate circulation, reducing heart disease risks.

Musculoskeletal Disorders (MSDs)
Sitting for extended periods without proper posture and ergonomics can lead to MSDs, including back pain, neck stiffness, and repetitive strain injuries. Over time, poor ergonomics can lead to chronic pain and even nerve damage.
How to fix these concerns: Ensure that your workspace is ergonomically sound. Adjust your chair height to allow feet flat on the floor, keep the screen at eye level, and use lumbar support if needed. For drivers, seat and mirror adjustments to reduce strain are vital.
Weight Gain and Metabolic Syndrome
Sitting for long periods often leads to lower calorie burn, contributing to weight gain and the risk of metabolic syndrome—a group of conditions that increase heart disease, stroke, and diabetes risk.
How to fix these concerns: Break up your day with small activities like walking meetings or quick exercises during breaks. Adjust your diet to include nutrient-dense foods and minimize processed foods to manage weight and support metabolism.
Mental Health Issues
Sedentary jobs are linked to increased stress, anxiety, and depression. The lack of physical activity can negatively impact mood-regulating hormones, contributing to mental health challenges.
How to fix these concerns: Regular exercise can help manage mental health. Practicing mindfulness or short breathing exercises throughout the day can also be beneficial.
Poor Circulation and Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT)
Remaining in the same position for extended periods can restrict blood flow, especially to the legs, increasing the risk of DVT. Symptoms can range from mild swelling to life-threatening blood clots.
How to fix these concerns: Frequent movement and stretching exercises help improve circulation. For desk workers, ankle rotations or calf raises can be done at the desk, while drivers can take regular breaks to stretch and move.
