With the Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) approval of Pfizer Pharmaceutical’s COVID-19 vaccine (with other approvals expected to follow), the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) issued new guidance on wearing masks for vaccinated individuals.
According to the CDC, even vaccinated individuals should wear masks in certain settings – especially in areas of high transmission – like Tallahassee. “The best way to slow the spread of COVID-19 and to prevent infection by Delta or other variants is to get vaccinated. For people who are vaccinated and still get infected (i.e., “breakthrough infections”), there is a risk of transmission to others. That is why, if you are vaccinated or unvaccinated and live or work in an area with substantial or high transmission of COVID-19, you – as well as your family and community – will be better protected if you wear a mask when you are in indoor public places.”
Not everyone can get vaccinated, and should follow additional guidance, according to the CDC. “People who are immunocompromised may not always build adequate levels of protection after an initial 2-dose primary mRNA COVID-19 vaccine series. They should continue to take all precautions recommended for unvaccinated people, until advised otherwise by their healthcare provider.”
While masks are not 100% effective, they continue to fight the spread of COVID-19 from person to person. Masks do not prevent COVID-19 spread, but instead, by wearing a mask, you reduce your exposure to the COVID-19 virus and furthermore, the spread of the virus, thereby reducing the viral load the body experiences. By reducing the viral load, you’re giving your body a chance to fight off a potential infection before it can fully take hold.
Persons who have been exposed to infected individuals or who have symptoms of COVID-19 should seek testing with a medical professional.
