Evaluating Your Ergonomics Program
After following the steps mentioned in previous articles, the team has:
Step 1: Identified Risk Factors in the Workplace
Step 2: Trained Management and Teammates
Step 3: Collected Health and Medical Evidence
Step 4: Launched Ergonomics Program
Now the team is ready to evaluate the results of the ergonomics program.
According to the National Institute for Occupational Safety & Health (NIOSH), the best way(s) to determine the effectiveness of an ergonomics program is to “compare the following data before and after the intervention:
- Job Analyses
- Checklists
- Symptom Surveys
- OSHA Form 300 Logs
- Employee Absentee Rates
- Turnover Rates
- Workers’ Compensation Costs
- Productivity Indicators
- Quality of Products and Services Savings
Remember that workers will not experience the benefits of your ergonomic program immediately. It can take months for old MSD symptoms to disappear, and you will need to modify your intervention if new MSD symptoms appear.”
The benefits of the ergonomics program can be measured in many ways, including minimizing team member callouts, which cost businesses an estimated $ million each year. With the ergonomics program running, businesses should see a decrease in callouts, absenteeism, turnover, and workers’ compensation costs at the same time as a rise in productivity.
