Next steps in implementing an ergonomics program in the workplace
See our previous article about first steps towards an ergonomics program.
According to the National Institute for Occupational Safety & Health (NIOSH), an ergonomics program involves “a systematic process for identifying, analyzing, and controlling workplace risk factors, often for reducing workplace injuries like musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs).”
The first step in this process involves identifying risk factors in the workplace for musculoskeletal disorders. (link to previous article)
The next step in implementing an important program like this is to train managers and teammates on the risks of MSDs in the workplace.
According to NIOSH, “Ergonomics training would be beneficial for all workers exposed to conditions that contribute to musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs). Employees know their own jobs better than anyone else does. Workers must be given the opportunity to discuss problems as they see them. Management and workers need to understand ergonomics if they are to correctly identify and solve workplace MSD problems.”
NIOSH says that the objectives of Ergonomics Awareness Training are:
- Learn how to recognize the risk factors for WMSDs
- Learn how to recognize symptoms of WMSDs
- Understand general methods for reducing risk factors for WMSDs
- Become aware of company’s health care procedures
- Learn your employer’s role in addressing and controlling risk factors for WMSDs
- Learn how workers can address risk factors for WMSDs
- Learn how to report your concerns of WMSDs
All trainings should be tailored to the target audience and the specific team. Teammates should be given the opportunity to ask questions related to their specific job functions.
