What is a board-certified physician?
Board certification is optional and different from possessing a medical license. According to the American Board of Preventative Medicine, “Board Certification demonstrates a physician’s exceptional expertise in a specialty and/or subspecialty of medical practice.” The physician must also pass a challenging certification exam given by a certifying body.
In order to be board-certified, a doctor must have a medical license, a degree from a medical school in the United States and must complete 15 hours of graduate-level coursework “in the core coursework areas of biostatistics, epidemiology, social and behavioral sciences, health services administration and environmental health sciences.”
How does board certification impact patient experience?
When a physician is board-certified, a patient can rest easy that the doctor has taken additional steps to show dedication to a particular field of medicine. A board-certified physician values continuing education and self-improvement since he or she must complete so many courses to keep up with certification. If necessary courses are not completed within an acceptable time frame, the physician loses board certification.
