Should I Get A COVID-19 Vaccine Booster Shot?
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), vaccination is the best way to prevent infection from the COVID-19 virus. As the CDC has continued to study the vaccine and its effectiveness, the organization has found that “recent data suggest [vaccines’] effectiveness at preventing infection or severe illness wanes over time, especially in people ages 65 years and older.” Combine this with the emergence of variants of COVID-19 and the CDC has now recommended booster shots for everyone over 5 years of age, if eligible.
Am I Still “Fully Vaccinated” if I Don’t Have a Booster Shot?
According to the CDC you are still fully vaccinated – “the definition of fully vaccinated has not changed and does not include a booster. Everyone is still considered fully vaccinated two weeks after their second dose in a two-dose series, such as the Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna vaccines, or two weeks after the single-dose J&J/Janssen vaccine.” While you may be considered vaccinated, the CDC also points out, “fully vaccinated, however, is not the same as having the best protection. People are best protected when they stay up to date with COVID-19 vaccinations, which includes getting boosters when eligible.”
