Booster Shot

The COVID-19 booster shot is here. Should I get it?

Should you get a COVID-19 booster shot?

If you live in Tallahassee, and were vaccinated against COVID-19, should you seek out a booster shot for the COVID-19 vaccine?

The COVID-19 vaccine is currently the best form of protection against the virus and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has identified certain medical conditions that make people more likely to be hospitalized, need intensive care, require a ventilator, and possibly die.
People at higher risk should work with their healthcare providers to guide their management of these conditions.  The best protection is to get vaccinated, and if recommended, a booster shot as soon as possible.

The following conditions have been identified to elevate the risk for COVID-19 infection (listed here alphabetically):

  • Cancer
  • Chronic Kidney Disease
  • Chronic Liver DiseaseBooster Shot
  • Chronic Lung Disease
  • Dementia (or other neurological disorders)
  • Diabetes (type 1 or type 2)
  • Down Syndrome
  • Heart Conditions
  • HIV Infections
  • Immunocompromised States
  • Mental Health Conditions
  • Obesity
  • Pregnancy
  • Sickle Cell Disease
  • Smoking (current or former)
  • Solid Organ or Blood Stem Cell Transplant
  • Stroke or Cerebrovascular Disease
  • Substance Use Disorders
  • Tuberculosis

What Can You Do?

In general, the older you are, the more health conditions you have, and the more severe the conditions, the more important it is to take preventive measures against COVID-19 such as vaccination, wearing a mask, social distancing, and practicing hand hygiene. Please contact your state, tribal, local, or territorial health department for more information on COVID-19 vaccination in your area.

People at higher risk, in Tallahassee and beyond, should work with their healthcare providers to guide their management of these conditions. The best protection is to get vaccinated as soon as possible, and that also means getting a booster shot if recommended.
