Preventing the flu in the workplace

Even though Covid-19 is on the forefront of everyone’s mind, it is imperative not to forget about ‘the flu.’

Each year, the influenza virus comes through schools, businesses, and homes like a storm. It does not discern – it tries to infect as many people as it can. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that in 2023-2024 alone, the flu has caused 20-39 million illnesses and 9.2-18 million medical visits. And those figures only measure the human toll, they don’t capture sick hours, callouts, lost school days or working days.

Person with a sign that says "Flu"The CDC also has advice for preventing the spread of the flu in the workplace, including:

1. Stay home when sick. Stay home for at least 24 hours after a fever is gone without fever-reducing medicine like Tylenol.
2. Stay at least 3 feet away from people who are sick. Seek alternative ways to participate in meetings, like remoting in or using conferencing software.
3. Covering coughs and sneezes with a tissue. Then washing hands as soon as possible afterward.
4. Wash hands thoroughly and often with soap and water. If soap and water are not available, use a hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol.
5. Clean surfaces and objects that are touched often, including desks, doorknobs, railings, computer keyboards, phones, and toys.
6. Stay prepared and informed. Get a seasonal flu vaccine, when available. Stay informed about the flu in your area. Know employer’s sick leave policy and communicate with workplace personnel about sickness.
